Wendy Layne

I was born in West Texas in 1967 and currently reside in The Woodlands, Texas. Art has always been an important part of my life, however, raising a family was a priority and for many years I created in a small corner of my bedroom very late at night while my children slept. As my children have grown I now find that there is an overwhelming pull for me to create and my home now includes a 200 square foot art studio. I am experienced with watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, collage, and sculpting with clay however, after discovering my natural ability with colored pencils in September of 2014, they are now my preferred medium. My goal is to spend the rest of my life deeply immersed in the art community inspiring other artists and art enthusiast with my work.
The majority of my photo realistic drawings are created with a combination of Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran D’Ache Pablo oil based pencils and a few Derwent wax based pencils on Stonehenge 100% cotton paper. Before I begin a portrait I study the photo and all of its intricacies and almost feel a connection with the subject. Through my drawings I attempt to convey the many stories that are revealed through the lines and crevices on the face or the sparkle of the individuals eyes. Life experiences vary among cultures and capturing those experiences and stories from the faces of people around the world with extreme detail from the strokes of a pencil feels almost magical to me.  I love the idea that by simply choosing to move my pencil in a particular manner, I can stimulate emotions and cause the audience to wonder about the life of the person in the drawing. I spend from 40 to over 100 hours passionately capturing the unique personality of each subject.
